Eazy had tickets ready for them the next morning to return to L.A. They found him backstage and and gave a back stage audition in person, Eazy signed them to his Ruthless Records label. When they learned Eazy was doing a show in Cleveland, they hustled up more money for bus tickets and headed back. They rapped for him over the phone, Eazy said he'd get back to them, but never did. As the famed story goes, they spent months living on the street, constantly trying to contact Eazy-E, until they finally received a call from him. But to get from the streets of Cleveland, to TV sets across the world, it's been a long journey for Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. They went from being broke, hungry and homeless in 1993 to watching their brand of flowing, rolling, rapid-clip, harmonized rap - dubbed the "Cleveland Sound" - hit the top of the charts. Much of Stevie Wonder’s smooth R&B harmony style was brilliantly mixed with DJ U-Neek’s hardcore beats, and even if their gangsta rapping became tiresome, the strength of tracks such as ‘Budsmokers Only’ and ‘East 1999’ managed to put it into the background. The quintet’s popularity could be attributed to their appealing blend of vocal harmonies and tough street raps, as featured on the hugely successful singles ‘1st Of Tha Month’ and ‘Tha Crossroads’. 1999 Eternal went to number 1, selling over 330, 000 copies in its first week of release and subsequently becoming one of the bestselling rap albums of all time. Their 1994 EP Creepin On Ah Come Up, featuring ‘Foe Tha Love Of $’, spent over 70 weeks on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart, and sold well over four million units. The group’s initial impact was astounding, even within a musical genre associated with a fast turnover of star acts.
